COMING FROM A LONG LINE OF FARMERS, INITIALLY, SELLS WAS DRAWN TO VITICULTURE. AT THE ENOLOGY AND VITICULTURE PROGRAM IN WALLA WALLA, SELLS EXCELLED AT PLANT PHYSIOLOGY, ENTOMOLOGY AND WEED IDENTIFICATION, BUT AFTER SPENDING A COUPLE HARVESTS IN THE WINERY, SELLS REALIZED SHE HAD A KNACK FOR WINEMAKING.
FROM WALLA WALLA SHE TRAVELED TO NEW ZEALAND TO WORK A HARVEST FOR ONE OF NEW ZEALAND'S OLDEST AND (AT THE TIME) LARGEST FAMILY OWNED AND OPERATED WINERIES.
MISSING THE VINEYARDS SELLS TOOK A JOB IN NAPA, CALIFORNIA AS A SUGAR SAMPLER. HAVING STRENGTHS IN BOTH VITICULTURE AND ENOLOGY, WITHIN 9 MONTHS SELLS WENT FROM SUGAR SAMPLER, TO LAB TECHNICIAN, TO ENOLOGIST FOR DUCKHORN VINEYARDS. AS ENOLOGIST SELLS HELPED MANAGE 250,000 CASES BETWEEN 7 WINEMAKING FACILITIES.
